Along the road of straying from the truth, hardening of hearts against the ways of guidance, character at odds with the character of intelligent beings and the ways of the best of the slaves of the Most Merciful, all forms of illness multiply and become prevelant. Symptoms become more severe and epidemics become firmly rooted. The soul is greatly harmed by this and stands on the brink of a calamity - when the medicine becomes rare and precious and cures and good health become elusive.
The soul is afflicted by many kinds of defects and diseases. But the most severe of these, the most evil and the one with the worst consequences is what happens to some of the people in terms of selfishness, preferring themselves to others and a relentless pursuit of individualism and even isolation. This reaches an extreme until he/she looks at himself with great pleasure and amazement and a belief that he has "made it" and perfected his good qualities. He imagines in himself a highness or superiority which he refuses to see or to acknowledge in others.
This despicable character flaw drives its possessor until it gets him to rejection of truth and standing in opposition to it and in rebellion against it. He can then transgress against Allah's slaves in their property, their lives and their honor. The seriousness of this disease requires us to analyze it carefully and accurately as Allah has explained it to us in His Book where He described the deeds of some of those who were arrogant in the land without right. In condemning them, Allah warns us about having any of their attributes by pondering their final destination and the consequences of their arrogance and their deeds. In the case of Firaun, Allah makes clear that his arrogance was the cause of all of the humiliation, pestilence and punishment that his people suffered.
The arrogance of Firaun and his people caused them to reject Allah's messenger to them which brought about their destruction in this life and eternal punishment in the hereafter.
Allah made clear that the driving force behind their rejection of Allah's CLEAR signs with which Allah fortified Musa in his call was nothing other than this hateful arrogance and its twin transgressing oppression.
Slaves of Allah! If there were no other ramifications of this lowly character flaw other than its effects on the personality and manners of the individual, that would be more than sufficient to cause people of sound intelligence to beware of it and struggle hard to avoid falling into any of it. So how about when faced with fearsome threats from Allah against those who have this attribute of pride or arrogance?
Allah said:
Dear slaves of Allah! The high station of the people of taqwa, high status of the righteous, the mujtahideen, the mujahideen and those truly practicing their deen is NOT the 'uluw condemned by Allah in the previous verses - not at all. Because this "highness" is rightfully so, by their racing in competition for good deeds. Moreover, Allah himself has described his believing slaves and his truthful forces on this earth as al-a'launa (the "highest" from the same root as 'uluw).
